I really liked this small book. When I first started it, I didn’t get invested in the first story (the title story) for some reason because I had hit a reading slump and was forcing my way through this tiny book. I found the writing to be very quirky and the characters even more so. I usually like reading that sort of thing, but found myself disengaged with the story. I feel like I should have liked it, and perhaps with a reread, I will. Miss Bobbit’s character was certainly very intriguing (and is said to be the inspiration behind a certain Holly Golightly)When I was partway out of my reading slump, I read the second story, A Christmas Memory, I started to love the book and really understood how Capote was trying to capture that childhood essence and innocence.

The second story is so precious and written so wonderfully the I found myself transported to a time when life was blessed with simple pleasures. When things were uncomplicated in the little childhood memories that we all have and in the friendships that we make. The last story, A Tree of Night, was definitely creepy.

I’m not sure what the resolve – if there was one – at the end was. The story itself though was very interesting and I was waiting for things to happen, but in a way, they didn’t or I missed it.Either way, I really enjoyed this little booklet of stories that convey a sense of child-like wonder, an innocence, and a quirkiness.

This is my first Capote experience and now that I’ve read this, I think I have a sense of his writing style, and I think I like it.
